A recent UK study shows that nicotine pouch sales have surged in recent years: 92 million units were sold in 2022, with a 55% year-on-year increase in 2023. Meanwhile, nicotine pouches are generally easily accessible to students aged 14 to 16. Between 2020 and 2024, the proportion of UK adults who have tried nicotine pouches rose to 5.4%, with 1% being regular users.

According to The Guardian, health experts are concerned about the potential health risks of nicotine pouches as sales rapidly increase in the UK. Studies show that some teenagers have experienced nicotine shock, nausea, and fainting after using nicotine pouches, while product design and marketing methods are beginning to appeal to younger users.

According to reports, nicotine pouches have become a hot product in the UK market since 2019. Sales reached 92 million units in 2022, and grew by 55% in 2023. Some experts point out that the packaging has shifted from an earlier, simple style to something more vibrant and appealing, attracting younger consumers.

A study published this week in the journal *Addiction* reveals that nicotine pouches are readily available to students aged 14 to 16, who describe them as discreet and easy to use. Some students reported nicotine shock, nausea, and fainting. Most teachers are unaware of student usage.

The study shows that between 2020 and 2024, the proportion of British adults who have tried nicotine pouches has doubled to 5.4%, with 1% being regular users. The rate of use among teenagers is also on the rise.

US research shows a similar trend, with 35% to 42% of American teenagers aware of nicotine pouches, and 9% to 21% of non-tobacco users expressing a willingness to try them.

Health concerns primarily focus on nicotine content and flavoring additives. While nicotine itself is not carcinogenic, it is highly addictive and irritating. Nicotine pouches contain between 1.8 mg and 97.5 mg of nicotine, higher than the 2–4 mg found in nicotine gum. Experts point out that the high content of free nicotine alkaloids in these products allows them to enter the bloodstream more quickly, even more effectively than cigarettes.

Experts also worry that users, especially teenagers, may turn to more harmful nicotine products. Animal studies show that nicotine exposure during adolescence may increase the risk of future drug use.

Users frequently report issues such as gum irritation and stomach discomfort. Nicotine also increases heart rate and constricts blood vessels, posing a higher risk to patients with heart disease.

Experimental studies have shown that nicotine pouch extract may trigger stronger toxicity and inflammatory responses in cells than pure nicotine, with flavorings being a primary suspect.

Despite these risks, some experts believe that nicotine pouches are still significantly less harmful than cigarettes and may help some smokers quit.

The UK government announced this week plans to ban the sale of nicotine pouches to minors, set nicotine caps, and restrict flavors. Experts consider this a positive step but point out that flavor regulation presents challenges; for example, while menthol cigarettes are banned, users can still recognize similar sensations.

Researchers suggest using more neutral flavor names and standardized packaging to avoid attracting teenagers.
